EAST-WEST / WEST-EAST

Zekreet, Qatar 2023

Within the vast, desolate desert landscape of Zekreet stands four steel monoliths crafted by internationally acclaimed artist Richard Serra.

The astonishing art installation is entitled East-West/West-East and features rectangular steel plates rising from the ground. The four plates are separated but strategically placed to form a cohesive line that stretches over a kilometer. The installation is situated in the Ras Brouq Nature Reserve, surrounded by beautiful white rock cliffs. The plates are over 14 meters tall but vary in height to accommodate the area’s topography, ensuring they align perfectly.

The steel used to build the installation was sourced from Germany, specifically chosen for the shades and hues they acquire while oxidizing. And though it is a relatively new installation, it has already achieved a rich dark red hue from rusting faster in a harsher desert climate.

Discover the art installation from various perspectives by exploring nearby cliffs and rock formations. Get up close to appreciate the immense plates. However, exercise caution during summer visits as the plates can trap heat, making it difficult to touch them without getting burned.

To reach the art installation, take the Dukhan Highway and turn right before The Cuban Hospital. Follow the Zekreet Beach/UNESCO Reserve Road until there is no paved road left, and then follow one of several tracks through sand and rugged terrain. While a car with high clearance can make it to the site, it is recommended to use a 4×4 to prevent getting stuck in sandy patches while exploring.

An hour and 15-minute drive from Doha, this part of the country has never had permanent settlements, but semi-nomadic tribes once inhabited the area. The nearest petrol station from the site is a twenty-minute drive away, so stopping over first is practical to refuel, adjust tire pressure, or use the lavatory.

The East-West/West-East exhibit by Richard Serra is an excellent example of his commitment to making art accessible to everyone. This installation not only showcases the artwork but also how it interacts with the location and the audience.
